How SwingArm works

SwingArm keeps a checklist of maintenance jobs for each of your bikes and tells you when each one is due, by distance or by time, whichever comes first.

On a phone, the navigation bar at the bottom has links to Tasks, History, Garage and More, with the red Log service button in the middle. On a computer they’re in the navigation bar at the top. Your avatar at the top right opens the More page.

Add your bike

  1. Open Garage and tap Add bike. (With more than one bike, you can also tap the bike’s name on Tasks, then Add bike.)
  2. Pick the year, make and model. If yours isn’t listed, choose Other / Not Listed and type it in.
  3. Enter the odometer reading. Not with the bike? Leave it blank and tap Add reading on Tasks later. Until then, tasks count by time only.
  4. Choose the final drive (chain, belt or shaft) and the engine cooling (liquid or air/oil). These pick the starter checklist, so a shaft-drive bike doesn’t get chain jobs.
  5. Tap Add to garage.

If we have the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule for your model, the checklist starts from it. Otherwise it starts with a sensible set of common jobs, which you can change any time. Then tell SwingArm when each job was last done (see how tasks come due).

With more than one bike, tap the bike’s name on Tasks (where it says how many bikes you have) to switch between them, or pick one in Garage. Garage is also where you add, edit or remove a bike.

How tasks come due

Each task has a distance interval (“every 4,000 miles”), a time interval (“every 12 months”), or both. Whichever runs out first decides when it’s due, so a bike that sits all winter still gets its brake fluid changed.

As a task gets close, it changes status. For an oil change every 4,000 miles or 12 months, Soon starts at 3,000 miles or 9 months, and Urgent at 3,600 miles or about 11 months:

  • Soon: the last quarter of the interval
  • Urgent: the last tenth of the interval
  • Overdue: past the interval

Tasks that need attention are shown as cards at the top of Tasks, most due first. Everything else is under All good. Tap any task to see its interval and when it was last done.

Each task needs a start point. A new bike’s tasks are listed under When were these last done? at the top of Tasks, and they won’t come due until you choose one of these for each task:

  • Log a past service: the last time you know it was done (an old receipt or a dealer stamp is fine). The task counts from that date and odometer reading. Tick every task done at that visit to fill them in at once; the next past service starts on the same date.
  • Start today: if you don’t know, the task counts a full interval from today’s odometer reading. If you find an old receipt later, log it and the task counts from that instead.
  • Never done: if it hasn’t been done since the bike was new, the task counts from 0 miles and January 1 of the bike’s model year. On a used bike, this can show it as overdue.

Open a task to choose for that task, or use Start all today or None done yet for all of them at once.

Keep the odometer up to date. Distance-based tasks can only count miles you’ve told SwingArm about. On Tasks, tap Update next to the odometer and enter the new reading.

Log service

  1. Tap Log service in the bar, or open a task and tap its Log service button.
  2. Tick everything done at that visit. Tasks that need attention are listed first, and related jobs coming up too (like the air filter with the oil change) say Do it with this. Show all tasks lists the rest. Tick Something else (one-off job) for work that isn’t on your checklist, like a new tire or fork seals.
  3. Enter the date and, if you have it, the odometer reading when it was done. Without a reading, the tasks’ miles count from your current odometer.
  4. Where, cost and notes (oil type, parts) are optional. Where is Home or the shop’s name; places you’ve used before show up as choices. The cost is for the whole visit.
  5. Tap Save service.

Each ticked task’s countdown starts again from that date and reading. History shows the visit as one entry, listing everything done. Services on the same day, at the same odometer and place, are one visit, even if you logged them separately.

Change your checklist

Tap a task to open it. Its buttons:

  • Edit interval (pencil): change the distance, the months, or the category. Set either one to 0 if it doesn’t apply.
  • Reset to default interval (circular arrow): go back to the manufacturer’s interval, or the starter one.
  • Delete task (trash can): take it off the checklist. Service you already logged for it stays in your history.

To track something else, tap Add task at the top of Tasks (or Add a custom task at the bottom). Give it a name, an interval, and when it was last done, so it counts from the right place.

Manual and manufacturer schedule

Tap Manual & schedule on Tasks to open your bike’s owner’s manual and see whether we have its manufacturer schedule.

  • No manual yet? Use the links there to find it on the maker’s site, then paste the link and tap Save link. You can use it right away; we review links before sharing them with other riders.
  • Schedule available? Tasks shows a banner with Review & apply. Applying it gives matching tasks the manufacturer’s intervals and adds the ones you’re missing. Starter tasks it replaces are removed, unless you’ve logged service for them. Tasks you added yourself are kept.

Schedules are added model by model, from the manuals riders send in.

History, spending and sharing

History lists every service you’ve logged for the bike, newest first, with a spending summary by category.

Share on History, then Create share link, gives you a read-only page anyone with the link can open, handy when you sell the bike or hand it to a shop. It shows dates, odometer readings, where it was done, costs and notes, never your email. Turn off link stops it working.

Export on History gives you:

  • Download spreadsheet (CSV), for Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets
  • Print / Save as PDF, a clean printable history. Only you can open that page, so to show someone else, send a share link instead of its address.

Settings and your account

More has your settings:

  • Distance: miles or kilometers. Everything converts, history included.
  • Theme: Auto follows your device’s light or dark mode, or pick Light or Dark.
  • Reminder emails: tasks coming due, an odometer check-in when a bike’s reading hasn’t changed in 30 days, and a monthly summary. Turn each on or off.
  • Push notifications: the same task and odometer reminders as notifications on your phone or computer. Turn them on for each device under On this device, and use Test to check one arrives. On an iPhone or iPad, add SwingArm to your Home Screen first and turn them on from the Home Screen app. In the SwingArm app for Android, turning them on asks the phone's permission, and tapping a notification opens the app. Signing out turns them off on that device, so the next person to sign in there doesn't get your reminders; they come back on when you sign in there again.
  • Add to Home Screen: SwingArm then opens full screen from its own icon, like an app. On an iPhone or iPad, open Safari’s Share menu and tap Add to Home Screen; in Chrome or Edge, use Install SwingArm on More. If you sign in there with your email, type in the code from the email: the link opens in Safari, which doesn’t share the Home Screen app’s sign-in.
  • Download my data: every bike, task and service record in one file, to keep as a backup.
  • Import a backup: adds bikes from that file, with their tasks and history, e.g. to restore them or move them to another account. Pick which bikes first; bikes already in your garage start unticked, and nothing you have is changed.
  • Delete account: erases your bikes, tasks and history for good. The dialog lets you download a copy of your data first.
